ABOUT GOJU RYU KARATE
Perhaps the most famous of all karate pioneers, Chojun Miyagi was born on April 15th, 1888 in Naha-Shi on the island of Okinawa.
His formal training started in 1902 with Kanryo Higaonna Sensei who accepted him as a student. Chojun Miyagi remained a loyal student of Higaonna Sensei and the Naha-te style up until Higaonna's death. As the primary Deshi (first disciple) he became successor to Higaonna's system.
Miyagi-sensei traveled to China and trained in Pakua Chang as well as other styles. In putting together his native hard style of Naha-te and the soft style of Pakua Chang the Goju (hard & soft) style was born.
He named and officially registered the Goju Ryu at the Butokukai in 1933. Miyagi Sensei passed away on October 8th, 1953 at the age of 65.
After his death Eiichi Miyazato Sensei was given all Miyagi Sensei's equipment and was asked by his fellow seniors and the Miyagi family to continue with his teaching duties. In 1957 Miyazato Sensei opened his own Dojo and named it the Jundokan (place for the study of the founders way) in the Asato district of Naha, teaching daily until his death in 1999.
Those who have had the fortune to have trained at the Jundokan are still influenced by its teachings today.
